Picturing Berlin: Final Event in Kreuzberg / by Schmoo Theune

The students of the Picturing Berlin workshop presented their stunning photo stories via projected slideshows last night at Prinzessinnengarten in Berlin. And both Susann Tischendorf and I could not have been happier with how this year has gone!

First, let me acknowledge how wonderful it was to have a full roster of young creatives from all over the world to come meet with us twice a month since April. That’s a real commitment, and it needs to be said. And their hard work really shows — the final slideshow presentations were so beautiful. Well done, all!

It was so difficult to imagine that some of these students had never used a camera before taking this workshop. All of the photo narratives showed a focus and commitment that is truly exceptional, and a side of Berlin that we’d never seen before.

Picturing Berlin is an integrative photography workshop series run by GfHF and supported by BAMF and other German cultural organisations. I described it a bit better here towards the start of the series.

Final thought: “The cream rises to the top.” This is one of the favorite lines of John Stanmeyer, a mentor and teacher who is a true master storyteller. It’s a concept that I never really understood until I saw it happening myself here: the best photos keep on making the cut until you’re able to sit back and enjoy a well-curated photo story.
